West Turkey Creek
Perennial water flows through this wooded canyon, supporting a riparian forest and creating a lush year-round recreation destination on the edge of the Chiricahua Wilderness.
A HUB FOR HIKING Six trails start from FR 41 along West Turkey Creek and connect with the network of trails that traverse the Chiricahua Mountains. Trails follow drainages and ridges and vary in length and difficulty, but are constant in their beauty, both in the natural features found along the trail and the incredible vistas in all directions. Out-and-back, thru-hikes, and loop options are available.
Located on the west side of the Chiricahuas at 6,200 ft. elevation, Sycamore Campground straddles the banks of West Turkey Creek.
Primitive conditions make pathfinding skills handy for travelers interested in following these trails from the West Turkey Creek Road into Rock Creek Canyon and beyond.
These three trails lead from the road up West Turkey Creek (FR 41) to the Crest Trail in the vicinity of Chiricahua and Flys Peak.
Mormon Ridge is quite steep, and many choose to follow it down, rather than up, if they use the trails to form a loop.
Mormon Canyon can be quite hot. This challenging trail passes through a sun-dappled riparian forest along Turkey Creek.
Tall peaks dominate the view as you drive up-canyon to this trailhead. Follow pine needle-carpeted pathways through forests made up of a variety of tree species.
