Panchuela Trailhead

Panchuela Trailhead is located at the end of Forest Road 305 accessed by NM 63 approximately 22 miles north of Pecos.

Uses: Hiking, backpacking, horseback riding.

Facilities: Drinking water is available April through October. Trash bins and vaulted toilets are available in the parking lot.

Special Instructions: NO HORSE TRAILERS ALLOWED. The closest equestrian parking is located at Winsor Ridge and Jack's Creek Trailheads.

General Information

Please keep your dogs on a leash for their own safety, to be courteous to other users, to respect and protect wildlife, and to protect vegetation. In a Developed Recreation Area it is prohibited to bring in or possess an animal, other than a service animal, unless it is crated, caged, or on a leash no longer than six feet, or otherwise under physical restrictive control. (36 CFR 261.16 (j)).   

Pecos Wilderness Restrictions:

  • Camping and campfires are prohibited in the following areas:
    • Beatty’s Flats
    • Pecos Falls
    • within 50 feet of a trail, stream, or river
    • within 200 feet of a lake
  • All garbage and refuse must be packed out.  Do not bury garbage or try to burn aluminum.
  • Mechanized equipment (including chainsaws) is prohibited in Wilderness areas.
  • Do not shortcut switchbacks on trails.
  • Possessing, storing, or transporting any part of a tree or plant is prohibited, with the exception of dead and down wood for campfires.
  • Do not tie horses to trees for more than 2 hours.  Use highlines or pickets.

$5 day-use fee, or use the New Mexico Enchantment Pass or Interagency Passes.

Dogs must be leashed at all times while in the campground. On the trail, dogs must be under complete voice control if unleashed.
