Rangeland and Grazing
Rangelands form a major component of ecosystems on the Tonto National Forest. Term grazing permits are issued for livestock on 104 allotments within the six Ranger Districts of the Forest. From the mountains to the prairies, grazing occurs over a wide range of diverse vegetation including the Sonoran desert to the Mogollon Rim, from mesa tops to open grasslands and drainages in between.
Forage is a renewable resource that thrives under proper grazing management. The way it is grazed and the environment in which it grows affect sustainability. Grazing management is one way in which we enhance and sustain plant growth.
