If you: PACK IT IN, PACK IT OUT!! Caution: Water levels fluctuate seasonally and the river can run with great velocity. Do not cross flooded roadways. Practice minimum impact by bringing a portable potty and disposing of the wastes properly. Remember: This is a long way from all services, so be sure your vehicle is in good condition, and has plenty of fuel.

Directions

Childs River Access Point: (Elevation 2,695 feet) From the “Y” in Camp Verde, follow the Gen. Crook Highway east for 7.3 miles. Turn right on Forest Road (FR) 708. Follow this road 13.8 miles to the turn-off onto Childs Road/Forest Road (FR) 502. Follow this road to the turn-off to the River Access Point just before you reach Childs. High-clearance vehicles are needed; four-wheel drive recommended if roads are muddy. Facilities: Primitive campground.

Sheep Bridge River Access Point: (Elevation2,000 feet) This site is 45 miles north of Carefree and requires a high-clearance vehicle; four-wheel drive is recommended if roads are muddy. From Carefree, take Cave Creek Road/FR 24 for approximately 33 miles to the Bloody Basin Tangle Creek area. At the junction of FR 24 and 269, turn right. Follow FR 269 for approximately 12 miles to the Sheep Bridge at the Verde River. Facilities: Primitive campground.
