LAS VEGAS, Nev., May 13, 2025 – A new Forest Order will reopen some areas of the Spring Mountains National Recreation Area that have been closed due to storm damage from Tropical Storm Hilary. The Deer Creek Picnic Site and Cathedral Rock Trail are now accessible to the public. The Mary Jane Falls Trail, Trail Canyon Trail and Upper Bristlecone Trail remain closed.
“The Mary Jane Falls trail received funding from the Southern Nevada Public Land Management Act and is undergoing engineering review for the parking area and the trail,” said Spring Mountains National Recreation Area District Ranger Jeremy Dorsey. “The damage sustained from Tropical Storm Hilary requires a reroute of the trail and significant construction repairs. It is estimated that the trail will reopen in the fall of 2027 after the parking area and trail are both complete.”
The Bristlecone trail received funding from SNPLMA earlier this year and will undergo surveys, National Environmental Policy Act analysis, design and construction in the next few years. The Forest Service estimates Bristlecone Trail reopening to the public in 2029.
The areas that remain closed sustained historical damage from Tropical Storm Hilary that require extensive assessment, stabilization and repair to make them safe for recreation. Many of these issues require long-term, multi-disciplinary approaches to ensure damages are fixed in a sustainable manner. As areas become available for safe use, they will be reopened. Recreation staff are working with various groups and volunteers to open areas as soon as possible.
An updated closure map is attached.
