Thunder Mountain Trail

This scenic trail climbs through timbered slopes, meadows and volcanic outcroppings, reaching the summit of Thunder Mountain in 3.6 miles.  From the top there are scenic views over Silver Lake and Kirkwood Mountain Resort. The trail continues another 1.4 miles to Horse Canyon. The trail is open to hikers, bicycles and equestrians.

General Information

California Campfire Permit required for wood, charcoal, or gas fires.

Check for seasonal fire restrictions before trip. Campfires are not recommended on this section; camping terrain is limited; no fire rings exist.

Trailhead parking is in a dirt lot. Area is in the process of being updated summer of 2025.

Trailhead is on Highway 88 between Silver Lake and Kirkwood Ski Area.
