Prevention
Every year human-caused wildfires account for nearly 90% of wildfires in the U.S. Though most of these fires are accidents, many of them can be prevented with a bit of education on how to prevent wildfires and lower the impacts of wildfires on your community.
Protect Our National Forests: Your Actions Matter!
Our national forests are treasures with breathtaking landscapes, vital wildlife habitat, and countless recreational opportunities. But these lands are also incredibly vulnerable to wildfire.
This season, please be fire aware and fire responsible.
Know Before You Go
Check local fire restrictions and warnings before heading out. Conditions can change rapidly.
- Campfire Safety
- Only build fires in designated fire rings.
- Clear a 10-foot radius around your campfire, down to bare soil.
- Never leave a campfire unattended.
- Drown your campfire with water, stir, and drown it again until it's cold to the touch. If it's too hot to touch, it's too hot to leave. Respect Smoking Regulations
If smoking is permitted, dispose of cigarette butts responsibly. Never toss them on the ground.
Vehicle Safety
Maintain your vehicle. Dragging chains, overheated brakes, and sparks from exhaust systems can ignite dry vegetation.
Fireworks are Prohibited
Fireworks are illegal in all national forests. Leave the fireworks at home.
Be Mindful of Equipment
Off-highway vehicles and other equipment can spark fires. Be aware of your surroundings and avoid dry, grassy areas.
Pack it in, Pack it out
Do not leave trash behind. Debris can become fuel for wildfires.
If you see smoke or a wildfire, report it immediately.
Call 911 or your local forest service office. The quicker we respond, the smaller the fire.
Remember...
- One careless spark can ignite a devastating wildfire.
- Your vigilance and care can make a real difference.
- Let's work together to protect these precious natural resources for generations to come.
