Nesmith Point Trail (#428)
At 3,848’ in elevation, Nesmith Point is the highest point along the cliffs lining the Columbia River Gorge. It is usually free of snow by April. It offers a steep climb with switchbacks through a spectacular box canyon, a forest of Noble and Silver fir within Mark O. Hatfield Wilderness and views of Beacon Rock and Mount Adams.
Starting at John B. Yeon State Park Trailhead, walk 300 feet to the intersection with the Nesmith Trail. Turn right. After a series of switchbacks, the trail will climb steeply up a canyon for 2.4 miles to a ridge. Continue climbing gradually for 1.3 miles to an old road leading to the summit, the former site of a fire lookout tower. The trail can be combined with Horsetail Creek Trail to Oneonta Trail #424 (2.9 miles) for a return trip to the Oneonta Trailhead on the Historic Columbia River Highway.
The Eagle Creek Fire of 2017 dramatically affected the trail, with widespread loss of trees and numerous landslides. As in any wildfire scar, know the weather forecasts, be alert for hazards, and be prepared with the 10 Essentials.
