Easton Glacier Climbing Route
Begin in the Mt. Baker National Recreation Area in Schreiber’s Meadow along Park Butte Trail, which is heavily used by climbers, backpackers, dayhikers and stock riders. Wander through waist-high fields of heather and huckleberries, through forest and arrive at a junction with Scott Paul Trail 603.1.
For the Easton Route, however, parties should stay left and continue on the Park Butte trail to the next junction with Railroad Grade Trail 603.2. Take the right fork and follow Railroad Grade trail to its end. From here, continue up through snowfields and rocky slopes to where the approach route meets the Easton Glacier. The climbing route ascends the Easton Glacier, passing the crater to the summit at Grant’s Peak. This route is fairly moderate and glacial travel experience is necessary.
The Easton Glacier Route is in the Mt. Baker National Recreation Area and the Mt. Baker Wilderness. This route is the second most popular on the mountain and can be very crowded at times.

Designated campsites for the Easton route access are along the Railroad Grade Trail.
- Railroad Grade Camps: 7 sites, 2.25 to 2.75 miles from the trailhead.
- High Camps: 4 sites at 5,600 feet, 3.75 miles from the trailhead.
- Sandy Camp: Terminus of Railroad Grade Trail at 5,900 feet. This is a designated camp area.
Backcountry toilet facilities are not available, please pack it out.
Snowmobilers use the Mt. Baker National Recreation Area until late spring or early summer. Climbers using the Easton or Squak route during May-early July will likely encounter them in the non-wilderness portion of the route.
A valid Recreation Pass is required at Park Butte Trailhead.
The Easton Glacier Climbing Route spans Mt. Baker National Recreation Area (NRA) and Mt. Baker Wilderness where wilderness regulations apply.
- Campfires are prohibited.
- Group size is limited to 12 people when you leave the Mt. Baker NRA and enter the Mt. Baker Wilderness.
- Camping is allowed only at designated camp sites below the 6,000 foot level in the NRA.
- Camping restrictions do not apply when camping above 6,000 feet.
