All trailheads and day use areas listed below require day use fees from May 1 through October 31 annually
(Tamanawas Falls Trailhead and Billy Bob Sno-Park are exceptions.)
Many day use sites on the Forest do not charge fees. However, charging a fee allows the Forest and our concessionaire partners to pay for maintaining toilets, water, trash removal, maintaining picnic tables, and other basic visitor benefits.
Why don’t concessionaires accept all the passes at day use sites?
Concessionaires are required to honor Senior and Access Interagency passes for a 50% discount on camping. However, as part of a Department of Labor regulation, concessionaires are not required to allow ‘free admission’ at day use areas, and honoring passes essentially does that. Concessionaires typically honor passes as they are financially able, and they spend most of their revenue operating and maintaining recreation sites.
Why do you use concessionaires at all?
Mt. Hood National Forest, and many other national forests and parks, have used concessionaires for decades to help operate and maintain recreation sites efficiently for visitors amidst growing demand, increasing operation and maintenance costs, and staffing challenges. Concessionaires can often hire short-term workers more easily and respond to on-the-ground needs quickly. These permits benefit the economy and save taxpayers money. Permit fees are reinvested into recreation sites.
