Permits
The Forest Service manages natural resources to meet sustainable resource management objectives in the Cherokee National Forest. The intent is to ensure that the land and its many resources are healthy and available for generations to come. In order to meet these objectives, permits may be required for the occupancy and use of national forest land.
Please contact the appropriate Ranger District Office for more details and information about how to get a permit.
Forest Products
Permits for forest products are available from Ranger District Offices. Please contact a Ranger District Office for up to date information.
- Permits are required for the removal of most forest products, including firewood.
- The cutting of Christmas trees is prohibited.
- Forest product permits are required for the harvesting of ramps.
Events and Commercial Permits
- Group use - groups larger than 75 people
- Outfitter and/or guides, Organizational camps, Commercial Photography and Filming, and similar investments and uses
Other Permits
- Permits for other items such as electrical easements, utility lines
- Private roads across national forest land
Special Use Authorization
A Special Use Authorization is a permit that grants rights or privileges of occupancy and use subject to specified terms and conditions on National Forest land. These permits cover activities, such as construction of roads, power and water lines, research, mineral and timber processing, etc. Please contact any Ranger District Office for information about non-recreation special use permits and recreation special use permits.
Research Activities / Collecting Animals or Plants
Any person conducting research activities or collecting animals or plants found on the Cherokee National Forest should contact the supervisor's office for more information. Collection of animals requires a permit from the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency.
