Chestoa Recreation Area
Chestoa Recreation Area is an accessible day-use area on the banks of the Nolichucky River south of Erwin.
It is a take-out for whitewater rafters who ride the river from Poplar, North Carolina through the wild Nolichucky Gorge. Canoeists also put-in here for a more-relaxed float downriver or to fish for trout and smallmouth bass. Picnicking along the river is popular.

CURRENTLY CLOSED DUE TO IMPENDING WEATHER FROM HELENE. CLOSURE IS ANTICIPATED THRU MONDAY, SEPT 30, BUT COULD BE LATER DEPENDING ON DAMAGE ASSESSMENT Day-use only, area is open sunrise to sundown.
No alcoholic beverages allowed. Fishing is not allowed in boat ramp area. Watch for large rafting buses backing in an out of area while loading. Be aware of rapidly rising water levels due to rain in North Carolina.

Directions
From Erwin, take US 19W/23, south to Exit 15. Turn left onto Jackson-Love Highway, cross over four lane, and turn right onto Temple Road. Travel 8/10-mile and turn left. Travel 1/2 mile and turn left. Cross over Veterans Memorial Bridge, then turn right onto Jones Branch Road. Travel 2/10-mile and turn right into Chestoa Recreation Area.
