Max Patch

Max Patch is a breathtaking 4,629-foot grassy bald nestled on the North Carolina–Tennessee border along the Appalachian Trail, accessible via a 1.5-mile moderate loop that rewards hikers with sweeping 360-degree views of the Bald Mountains, Unakas, Great Smokies, and Black Mountains.

General Information

Once cleared in the 1800s for grazing and later even used as an airstrip, it’s now preserved by the U.S. Forest Service, Appalachian Trail Conservancy, and Carolina Mountain Club to maintain rare pollinator and bird habitats—including golden‑winged warblers and monarch butterflies.

With minimal facilities—no restrooms or trash cans—visitors must adhere to Leave No Trace principles.

Any commercial activity (such as a paid photography shoot, guiding and outfitting, vendor services) requires a Special Use Permit from the USDA Forest Service.

All dogs must be on leash.

Getting There

Parking

There’s a small gravel parking lot just below the bald that fills up quickly—especially on weekends—so arriving early is highly recommended.

If the lot is full, visitors may park along the gravel access road in clearly marked spots, but must adhere to posted signs to avoid blocking traffic or emergency vehicles.
