Poor Farm Dispersed Recreation Area

Hiking and fishing opportunities are abundant at Poor Farm Dispersed Recreation Area. Enjoy hiking trails that meander along the Jackson River, or break out that rod and reel as the trout stocked waters are popular amongst fly and traditional fishermen alike.

Open year round

Year Round, Day use only: open sunrise to sunset

The America the Beautiful Interagency Pass series and the George Washington & Jefferson National Forests Seasonal Day Use Pass are accepted here. The Virginia State Parks pass does not apply on the National Forest. 

Horses allowed except where prohibited.  When recreating on Forest Service Lands, follow the safety and outdoor ethics recommendations. 

No Fees are required for this site.

Please, keep your pet on a leash when in a recreation area or campground. The law requires dog owners to keep their dog on a leash with a length no greater than 6 feet and under physical control when within a recreational area, such as a campground or day use area (36 CFR 2616(j)).

Directions

From the Intersection of State Route 39 and US 220: Go north on US 220 about seven miles to SR 623 on the left. Follow SR 623 about two miles to the national forest boundary and the beginning of the Poor Farm Dispersed Recreation Area.
