Management
Fire Management on the National Forests and Grasslands in Texas
Fire is a natural and essential part of healthy forest and grassland ecosystems. On the National Forests and Grasslands in Texas (NFGT), fire management helps reduce hazardous fuels, restore native plant communities, and support wildlife habitat.
The U.S. Forest Service uses a combination of prescribed fire, wildfire response, and community engagement to manage fire safely and effectively across the landscape.
Key Objectives:
•Reduce wildfire risk to communities and natural resources
•Maintain and restore fire-adapted ecosystems
•Improve forest health and resilience
•Provide training opportunities for wildland firefighters
Prescribed Fire
NFGT conducts prescribed burns throughout the year under specific weather and fuel conditions to meet ecological and safety goals. These controlled fires mimic natural fire cycles and help reduce the buildup of flammable vegetation.
