Mill Creek Recreation Area

This day use area provides 3 picnic sites, some in groups of two and three for small groups. This area provides access to Mill Creek, which is populated by wild, stream-bred rainbow trout.  The Kaintuck Hollow Trail is also located nearby.

General Information

Day Use from 6 am to 10 pm

When visiting, please remember

  • No overnight camping in day use areas at any time of year.
  • Dogs must be on a 6 foot leash in the day use area
  • No trash containers; please pack out all your trash

No fees are required for this site

Trail Use

Dogs are allowed on hiking trails, as long as they are kept on a leash. Unleashed dogs can pose a danger to your pet, the natural resources of the area, and other forest visitors.

  • Leashes must be six feet, or shorter, when in developed recreation sites, including trails within the boundaries (36 CFR 261.16(j)) when they are not inside an enclosed vehicle or tent.
  • Yield your leashed dog around other hikers, bicyclists and horses.
  • Be sure to give your pup water breaks to keep them hydrated.
  • Store their food in bear-resistant food containers.
  • Pack out your dogs waste or bury it 100 feet from water and trails.
  • Bring enough food and water for your canine companion.

From Rolla,

  • take Interstate 44 west about 6 miles.
  • Exit at Highway T (Newburg, Doolittle exit).
  • Travel south on Hwy T about 3 miles to Hwy P.
  • Turn right on P; go 3 miles and turn left/east on County Road 7550.
  • Travel 2 miles to picnic area.

Fishing - River/Stream Info

A Blue Ribbon Trout Area from Yelton Spring to Little Piney Creek, including Wilkins Spring and spring branch.

  • Only artificial lures and flies may be used. Natural, soft plastic and scented baits are prohibited.
  • The daily limit is one trout of 18 inches or greater length.
  • Missouri fishing permit is required, and a trout permit also is required if trout are harvested.
  • Only flies and artificial lures may be used, and soft plastic baits and natural and scented baits are prohibited when fishing for any species.
  • Gigging, bowfishing and using an atlatl are prohibited, and fish taken by these methods may not be possessed on these waters or their banks.

Kaintuck Hollow Trail - 16-miles

Kaintuck Hollow Trail offers a total of 16 miles of looping trails leading you through an oak forest, interspersed with hickory, cedar, dogwood, and pine plantations for great nature viewing. Kaintuck Hollow Trail offers multiple segmented routes ranging from one to fifteen miles stretches passing such features as a natural bridge, unusual rock formations, and Dewitt Pond.
