This order aims to protect the public health and safety of users recreating on National Forest System (NFS) lands by outlining conditions of occupancy and use.

Forest Order
Pursuant to 16 USC 551 and 36 CFR 261.50(a) and (b), the following acts are prohibited on all Forest Service lands on the Shawnee National Forest. This Order is effective upon the date of signature until rescinded and this order rescinds and supersedes Order#R9-08-12-02, signed on February 9th, 2012.
- Camping in excess of 14 days in any 21 day period. After the 14 days has been reached, no camping is allowed anywhere in the Shawnee National Forest until the end of the 21 day period. (36 CFR 261.58a)
- To establish, maintain, or occupy any camp or camping equipment present in excess of 14 days in any 21 day period. Once the camp has reached 14 days within a 21 day period it must be removed from the Shawnee National Forest and cannot be re-established until the end of the 21 day period. (36 CFR 261.58a)
- Entering or using a developed recreation site or portion thereof when that site or facility is posted closed. (36 CFR 261.58b)
- It is prohibited to enter or to remain in a campground between the hours of 10:00 PM and 6:00 AM, except for persons who are occupying such campgrounds. (36 CFR 261.58c)
- Possessing a beverage which is defined as an alcoholic beverage by state law, in violation of the laws of the State of Illinois. (36 CFR 261.58bb)
- Possessing, storing, or transporting any part of a tree or plant, as specified. For the purpose of this order, it is prohibited to possess cannabis plant(s) or any substance derived from the manufacture of cannabis, except those cannabis plants and derivatives defined as hemp under the 2018 Farm Bill. - Possessing or storing any glass beverage or metal beverage container at the developed swimming beach or in designated swimming areas at Lake Glendale, Pounds Hollow Lake. (36 CFR 261.58cc)
- Possessing any glass food or beverage container in the Bell Smith Springs Recreation Area, excluding the Redbud Campground. (36 CFR 261.58cc)
- Possessing any disposable food or beverage package, container, or wrapper within or on the Garden of the Gods Scenic Overlook, Observation Trails, or within the Bluffs. (36 CFR 261.58cc)
- To use a single developed campsite by more than eight (8) users, a double developed campsite by more than sixteen (16) users, or a triple developed campsite by more than twenty-four (24) users. (36 CFR 26158f)
- Possessing, parking or leaving more than two (2) motor vehicles in a single developed campsite, four (4) motor vehicles in a double developed campsite, or six (6) motor vehicles in a triple developed campsite except motorcycles and bicycles. (36 CFR 261.58i)
- Camping within 150 feet of a shoreline on Cedar Lake, Little Cedar Lake, and Kinkaid Lake. (36 CFR 261.58e)
- Swimming outside a designated swimming area at Lake Glendale or Pounds Hollow Lake. (36 CFR 261.58k)
- Being in the swimming and beach areas at Lake Glendale or Pounds Hollow Lake after sundown or before sunrise. (36 CFR 261.58l)
- Camping within ¼ mile of a Developed Campground or Picnic Ground. (36 CFR 261.58e)
- Possessing, discharging or using any kind of firework or other pyrotechnic device. (36 CFR 261.52f)
- Being publicly nude. (36 CFR 261.58j)
- Shortcutting a switchback in a trail (36 CFR 261.55e)
- Operating or using any internal or external combustion engine without a spark arresting device property installed, maintained and in effective working order meeting Department of Agriculture, Forest Service Standard 5100.1a. (36 CFR 261.52j)
Pursuant to 36 CFR 261.50(e), the following persons are exempt from this Order:
- Any Federal, State, or local officer, or member of an organized rescue or fire fighting force in the performance of an official duty.
- Persons with a permit specifically authorizing the otherwise prohibited act or omission.
These prohibitions are in addition to the general prohibitions in 36 CFR Part 261, Subpart A.
A violation of these prohibitions is punishable by a fine of not more than $5,000 for an individual or $10,000 for an organization, or imprisonment for not more than six months, or both. 16 USC 551 and 18 USC 3559, 3571, and 3581.
