Archaeology and Cultural Resources
Southern Illinois has been occupied for centuries and evidence of its past people and their culture can still be found hidden in the Shawnee Hills today.
Archaeological sites throughout southern Illinois can provide important insights and knowledge about the past that cannot be learned elsewhere. They are the clues left behind by the past inhabitants that can help archaeologists determine who was living at the site, when they were living there and what they were doing.
Artifacts contained in the sites help us learn about the history, cultures and peoples that often are not well represented in current history books. Professional archaeologists depend on finding artifacts in their original location and in association to other artifacts to accurately interpret the story of the past. Removing artifacts destroys the archeologists’ ability to reconstruct the history and life ways of the people who once occupied the area.
Historical and Cultural Sites
Some historical sites have been improved for recreation visitors. Often these sites are interpreted and are more easily found because of roadway signs to the site. Site developments include parking and bathrooms and other features that also protect the historical site from increased visitor use.
- Illinois Iron Furnace Historic Site
- Millstone Bluff Archaeological Area
- Rim Rock National Recreation Trail
- Lincoln Memorial Picnic Area
Other sites of historical importance are not signed and can be difficult to find. They are undeveloped and lack good road access and parking.
Whether the historical or cultural site is developed or undeveloped it is still vital that all sites are protected. Help protect the site by learning the proper site etiquette before you visit.
Historic Preservation
Archeological sites on National Forest system lands are protected by a number of federal laws. It is a federal offense to disturb, alter, remove or damage archeological sites and objects. Historical and archeological resources include structural, architectural, and artifactual or material remains of past human life or activities at least fifty years old and of historical or archeological interest. The physical state, location, and context in which the resources are found are also important aspects.
You can help preserve history by leaving archeological sites undisturbed and contacting us to report any looters or evidence of looting activity.
