Forest Service Permits Available for Property Owners and Public in the Brimson Fire Complex Area –

Free firewood and gravel permits are available for up to three years for recovery efforts

Duluth, MN, September 30, 2025— The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Forest Service-Superior National Forest is offering free firewood permits for the public for up to three years for personal use within the Brimson Fire Complex area, near Brimson, in St. Louis County, Minnesota to help aid in restoration efforts. Additionally, property owners within the 28,000 acres affected by the Brimson Fire Complex can obtain a free gravel permit for up to three years for up to 100 cubic yards of material from one of the gravel pits listed below. Permits will be available beginning on Monday, October 6, 2025. 

To obtain a free firewood permit, please visit the Superior National Forest website for more information. Firewood permits can be obtained at the Laurentian Ranger District.   

To obtain a free use gravel permit, visit the Laurentian Ranger District office in Aurora or email your request to the following address: PDL-R9-SUPERIOR-MINERALS@USDA.GOV. Please include your name, contact information (mailing address, phone number, email) along with pit name and requested volume of gravel. Up to 100 cubic yards of gravel from one of the identified sources below is available for permits. Nearby pits as shown on the following map: 

  • Fairbanks Pit - T56N, R13W, Sec. 12, St. Louis Co. 16 (FH11) to south on Forest Road 416. Approx. 1 mile to right on Forest Road 416A to gravel pit
  • Skibo Pit - T58N, R13W, Sec. 23 St. Louis Co. 110 to east on St. Louis Co. 569/Forest Road 120 for 5 miles (1.5 miles past railroad tracks). Entrance to pit on the north side of the road.
