Massie - Hall Ski Trails (Norpine Trail System)
The Massie - Hall Ski Trails are two large loops in the Norpine Ski Trail System. They connect to the Deer Yard Ski Trails and the Cascade River Ski Trails. Also in this area are a cluster of short loops. Sections of these trails are open to snowshoeing and skijoring (skiing behind a dog) as well.
The Hall and Massie loops are both rated as moderate difficulty with the smaller loops rated easy. All lie on the ridge rising up from the Lake Superior shore, so be ready to climb up and swoop down. The Hall loop passes through an area named the Cedar Cathedral, which is certainly worth a visit.
The tops of the loops offer beautiful views of Superior.

Safety
You have the responsibility to be adequately prepared for a trip in the wilderness with
- good footwear,
- ample water,
- emergency supplies, and
- sufficient time to make the trip.
You should be self sufficient: there is no cell phone coverage, and due to the nature of the trail, there is no easy way to get assistance in, nor any easy way to get people out in emergencies.
Travel
- A compass and accurate map are essential.
- Bring reliable maps. Maps can be purchased at some Forest Service offices, area businesses and outfitters, or directly from the map companies.
- If you get lost, don’t panic. Sit down, relax and think. Chances are that you will figure out your location in a few minutes.
- If you plan to use a Global Positioning System (GPS) for navigating, be sure you also bring a map and compass as a back up in case your GPS unit fails.
- Dress in layers and be prepared for every kind of weather situation.
See the map at the Norpine Trails Association website.
You will need to purchase a Great Minnesota Ski Pass to use the Massie - Hall Ski Trails. Funds from this Pass go directly to maintenance and grooming of the trails.
When visiting, please remember
- Trails are for non-motorized use only.
- Only use facilities that are provided.
- Traditional dog sledding is not permitted on the groomed trails, however, sections of the trail system are open to skijoring.
- Please pick up your dog's litter and repair sections of track which have been melted from dog droppings.
- Skiers should alert dog users to their presence and avoid spooking dogs.
