Special Forest Products

Image

Special forest products are non-timber biological resources that are used for subsistence, personal, educational, commercial, and scientific use.  Examples are mushrooms, boughs, Christmas trees, bark, ferns, moss, burls, berries, cones, conks, herbs, roots, and wildflowers. Also included are cuttings (such as of willow used for restoration) and transplants (as for landscaping purposes).

Special forest products do not include saw timber, pulpwood, cull logs, small round wood, house logs, utility poles, minerals, animals, animal parts, rocks, water or soil. Gathering of special forest products for commercial use always requires a permit. Gathering of special forest products for personal use may require a permit.

Please consult with the local Forest Service Ranger District Office prior to gathering any special forest products to assure proper understanding of the permitting requirements.
