Summit Lake & Tawah Creek

Description:

Throughout the year Summit Lake offers a unique chance to view a myriad of wetland animals. One of the most obvious and perhaps most majestic animals to be seen here is the trumpeter swan. High numbers of other waterfowl species can also be seen during spring and fall migration. Salmon spawn in the clear waters of Tawah Creek.

Viewing Information:

In addition to majestic trumpeter swans, observant wildlife watchers may catch a glimpse of many other animals. During spring and fall migration, great flocks of cranes, swans, and geese pass overhead, and sometimes rest, on the Yakutat Forelands. During early spring the intertidal mudflats of the area are an important staging area for migrating shorebirds.

Additionally, visitors may also see moose, brown and black bears, grey wolves, coyotes and a all five species of Pacific salmon.

Safety First:

The Yakutat area can be wet and chilly. Be prepared for wet and chilly weather at any time of the year. There are no staffed facilities along the Alsek Road. Visitors need to be prepared for any emergencies that may occur.

Be cautious of bears in the area. NEVER approach a bear under any circumstances. If you are lucky enough to see one, view it from a distance. Go to the Bear Sense page for more information about how to behave in bear country.
