Abstract:
The nationwide forest inventory (NFI) of the USDA Forest Service Forest Inventory and Analysis program collects, analyzes, and reports information on the status, trends, and condition of America’s forests: how much forest exists, where it exists, who owns it, and how it is changing, as well as how the trees and other forest vegetation are growing and how much has died or has been removed in recent years. This data publication includes the annual (2006-2024) standard state-level FIADB data tables for the northern region of the United States, which includes 24 states. Data for each state and year fall into the following categories: 1) area of land by status, area of forest and timberland; 2) number of live and growing stock trees; 3) volume of sound total-stem bark and wood, merchantable bole wood, and sawlog wood; 4) net growth, mortality, and removals of sound total-stem bark and wood, and merchantable bole wood; 5) aboveground biomass (weight) of live trees; 6) county-level data; 7) state-level changes; and 8) sampling errors. Data will vary slightly across states and years, with later years including additional data tables. Data from 2006-2015 are provided as Portable Document Format (PDF) files, and data from 2016-2024 are provided as Microsoft Excel (XLSX) spreadsheet files. All data files are self-explanatory and include complete details on data table contents, units, etc. In addition to the annual state-level data files, this package also includes additional documents, inventory reports, state-level images, and other information that might be helpful to understand the data.
