Abstract:

This data publication describes the establishment of a white oak progeny site on the Green Mountain National Forest, Vermont (VT) and includes initial height and length data for seedlings planted on April 19-20, 2023 and April 14, 2025. The planting location is on Bowen Hill Road in East Dorset, Vermont and is site is referred to as “Bowen Hill” throughout. The seedlings planted in 2023 were sourced from the White Oak Genetics and Tree Improvement Project at the University of Kentucky and include 44 families (replicated 20 times) representing the historical growing range of white oak. Additional seedlings were planted in 2025 comprising 16 "local" provenances (replicated 18 times) sourced from acorns collected by USDA Forest Service, Northern Research Station employees and grown at the New York State Nursery in Saratoga Springs, NY. Data are provided as 1) a list and location of all 60 seedling families planted, 2) the length and height of each of the 1390 seedlings planted in tabular format, and 3) individual seedling information provided as a tabular representation of a schematic diagram. Slides containing a satellite image of the study area as well as a schematic diagram of the planting are also included.
