Abstract:
The South Umpqua Experimental Forest in Oregon comprises four forested watersheds consisting of zero- and first-order streams. The four watersheds represent mesic, mixed-conifer dominated forest stands having received different silvicultural treatments, leading to distinct differences in stand density and structure, in the late 1970's. Each watershed is gauged for continuous monitoring of volumetric flow. Beginning in 2017 and ending in 2025, hourly stream and corresponding air temperature data have been collected at points in each stream network; extending from the outflow gaging station, upstream to network nodes, culverts associated with roads, and points of stream initiation. The monitoring is intended to provide finer scale resolution of stream condition, particularly annual and seasonal temperature dynamics in headwaters stream systems demonstrating varying degrees of intermittency. The four watersheds are expected to undergo a new round of silvicultural treatment in the next 2-3 years and the current data may provide for a robust foundation for characterizing subsequent environmental responses to the new treatments.
