Abstract:

This dataset contains terrestrial laser scan (TLS) data collected between 2019-2025 at forested units in the New Jersey Pine Barrens that experienced recent wildfires, prescribed fires, or were fire excluded. Wildfires and prescribed fires observed in this dataset represent a broad range of effects that can occur in this landscape, with instances of effects being severe throughout the vertical forest profile or limited to lower forest strata. Scans were made in the growing and dormant seasons dependent on the fire activity. Wildfire history beyond what is provided in this dataset is available for the sites upon request of the New Jersey Forest Fire Service. The majority of scans are of pine or mixed pine and oak. The original intents of the TLS scan collections (many are spatially clustered) was to facilitate specific local research or monitoring efforts related to embers, ticks, fire ecology, and fuels management. Collectively, these data represent a comprehensive range of forest structures and fire effects found in the New Jersey Pine Barrens upland pine and oak and lowland pine forests. In some cases, these data compliment other existing datasets, such as other TLS scan datasets collected at the US Forest Service Silas Little Experimental Forest and Cedar Bridge long-term ecosystem carbon flux and fire research sites (Clark et al. 2025; Skowronski et al. 2025). This dataset includes E57 and PTX-formatted point cloud data collected using a Leica BLK360 Gen 1 (G1) or Gen 2 (G2) scanner.
