Abstract:
Changing fire regimes and climate threaten postfire recovery of subalpine conifers, and it is critical to understand how terrain features influence distinct regeneration mechanisms. Here, we experimentally test the effect of rugged terrain on seed dispersal, seedling establishment, and microclimate in a rugged landscape (Greys River District, Bridger-Teton National Forest) within the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem. All sites were located within the 2018 Marten Creek Fire perimeter. From July - October 2024, we trapped wind-dispersed subalpine conifer seeds in mature, live forests to estimate seed pressure on the landscape, and we trapped seeds in burned areas that varied in ruggedness and orientation relative to the live-forest edge (upslope or downslope) to measure dispersal. In October 2024, we planted Pinus contorta var. latifolia and Pseudotsuga menziesii var. glauca seeds in terrain that varied in ruggedness and shape. We assessed germination success and installed microclimate data loggers in June 2025, and we assessed establishment in late September 2025. All data collection has been completed.
