Abstract:
The county wide tree-canopy map for Sonoma County, CA was derived from high-resolution (1 meter) LiDAR collected in 2013. In conjunction with the 2013 LiDAR, 2011 and 2013 Orthos, collected and mosaicked. The original LiDAR point-cloud data were first converted into digital surfaces representing specific segments of the point cloud: 1) points classified as ground were used to develop a digital elevation model (DEM); 2) first returns were included in a digital surface model (DSM) representing the height of all features relative to sea level; and 3) last returns were included in a digital terrain model (DTM) capturing the lower reaches of partially pervious landscape features such as trees, also relative to sea level. The DSM and DTM were then normalized relative to ground elevation by subtracting the DEM from each layer, producing a normalized digital surface model (nDSM) and a normalized digital terrain model (nDTM). The object-based expert system integrated the imagery, lidar surface models, and lidar point clouds into a high-performance computing environment that mapped tree canopy based on the spectral, height, and spatial information contained within the data. The final output consisted of an enhanced classified lidar point cloud and a 15 cm resolution raster tree canopy dataset.
