Educational Trunks
Our Nez Perce National Historic Trail Traveling Educational Trunks contain three sections. The first section describes the traditional lifestyle of the Nez Perce and gives insight to why the Nez Perce did not want to leave their homeland for a reservation. The second section uses different hands-on lessons to provide students with an opportunity to explore what the life of a United States soldier may have been like in this time period. The final section of these trunks allows students to explore the war the Nez Perce leaders' decision resulted in and what ultimately happened to the Nez Perce.
The trunks include traditional Nez Perce crafts, games, and stories, as well as some military clothing, and gear. There are also two videos that give two different views of the 1877 war and flight of the Nez Perce.
We have two of these trunks available for loan on a first come first serve basis. If you have questions or would like to borrow one of our trunks, please contact our partners at the Montana Natural History Center at 406-327-0405.
The educational trunks are designed for use by 4th through 5th grade. Educators have commented that two weeks should be allocated to cover the full curriculum.
Google Earth - Virtual Experience
The Nez Perce Trail Foundation has built an interactive map. Click here for the link to the Google Map version.
Teachers will find the tour most useful by running it in Google Earth, available as a free download, which provides a multitude of ways to virtually experience the NPNHT.
