The vastness of the Tongass provides many opportunities for several types of hunting and trapping, ranging from big game hunting for coastal brown bear to trapping mink and martin. Forest Service public recreation cabins and shelters are popular base camps for hunting trips, especially during the rainy and cool fall season.
The Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADF&G) manages Alaska’s wildlife populations. The Forest Service manages wildlife habitat along with wildlife populations, for subsistence purposes, on Forest Service managed lands in Alaska. Please refer to the ADF&G website and the Federal Subsistence Management website for hunting regulations.
