The vastness of the Tongass provides many opportunities for several types of hunting and trapping, ranging from big game hunting for coastal brown bear to trapping mink and martin. Forest Service public recreation cabins and shelters are popular base camps for hunting trips, especially during the rainy and cool fall season.

The Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADF&G) manages Alaska’s wildlife population while the Forest Service manages wetland and forest habitat for the game. Refer to the ADF&G website for species information, permits and hunting regulations.
