Outfitter & Guide Services

Guided fishing, hunting, and trail ride activities are available throughout the Medicine Bow-Routt National Forests and Thunder Basin National Grassland. These Forest Service partners operate under special use permits and help visitors safely enjoy the Forest. If you are using a paid guide for activities occurring on National Forest lands, the guide is required to have a special use permit.

The role of commercial outfitters and guides is to provide specialized knowledge, skills, experience and equipment that general recreationists might not otherwise possess. This contributes to high quality opportunities for people to recreate on public lands regardless of their skill level or prior experience.

Outfitter-guides should:

  • Provide for outfitting and guiding services that address concerns of public health and safety and that foster successful small businesses consistent with the applicable land management plan.
  • Facilitate greater participation of youth and educational groups in their program.
  • Be skilled and experienced individuals and conduct their activities in a manner that protects environmental resources and ensures that national forest visitors receive high-quality services

Outfitter/guides that provide services on National Forest System land are required to obtain a permit from the district on which the services are being provided. A permit is required to protect forest resources, as well as the customer.
