Baranof Castle State Historic Site (Castle Hill)
Baranof Castle State Historic Site.
1800's
Tlingit natives originally inhabited this area and built a strategic fortification here. Russians occupied the site between 1804 and 1867. In 1867, Alaska was officially transferred from Russia to the United States on top of Castle Hill. Today, an easily accessed walkway can be taken to the top of the hill where spectacular views of downtown Sitka and the waterfront can be seen below.
Site connection to the National Historic Preservation Act
The site is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and designated a National Historic Landmark.
