To facilitate management, the forest is divided into four ranger districts: Gasquet, Orleans, Lower Trinity and Mad River. The Smith River National Recreation Area makes up most of the Gasquet District. The forest also manages the 212-acre Humboldt Nursery in McKinleyville, California. The Yurok Experimental Forest, comprising approximately 1,000 acres, is included in the total acreage of the Six Rivers National Forest, but is administered by the Pacific Southwest Forest and Range Experiment Station.
