Planning
Each national forest and grassland is governed by a management plan in accordance with the National Forest Management Act (NFMA). These plans set management, protection, and use goals and guidelines. Monitoring conditions on a forest or grassland ensures projects are done in accordance with plan direction and determines effects that might require a change in management.

The U.S. Forest Service Law Enforcement Officers have discovered 10 acres of unauthorized land clearing along Sam Rayburn Reservoir within the Angelina National Forest. A mature 110-year-old forest stand consisting of loblolly pine, shortleaf pine, & bald cypress was clearcut by private landowners. It is suspected that this activity was done to create better reservoir viewing and easier access. This illegal & unauthorized activity has destroyed important wildlife habitat & has made the land susceptible to erosion processes. Planting of native species is needed to restore this area back to its original stand condition to promote wildlife habitat and to protect against erosion.
The Forest Service proposes to implement planting activities on approximately 10 acres of National Forest System lands in Compartment 55, Stand 11, Angelina National Forest, Angelina County. Native tree species (short leaf pine) and (bald cypress) will be planted to restore a site that has been illegally cut back to its original stand condition. The Ecological Classification system (ECS) was used to determine site specific species for planting. There will be no site prep or any other land altering activities. Local contractors, volunteers, and U.S. Forest Service staff will take part in planting operations. Planting will consist of using native containerized seedlings, approximately 2,000 bald cypress seedlings, 500 Trees Per Acre, planting 4 acres closest to the shoreline, and approximately 3,000 short leaf pine seedlings, 500 Trees Per Acre, planting 6 acres of uplands moving away from the shoreline. *Please see C55 area map
The purpose of the project is to restore forested conditions to its previous state to protect soils from erosion as well as to improve wildlife habitat throughout the cut area. The proposed activities would occur on National Forest System lands that border Sam Rayburn Reservoir.
