Cherokee National Forest
The Forest Service follows NEPA regulations issued by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Under this rule, Forest Service officials determine which proposed projects are shared for public input.
The agency no longer issues a schedule of proposed actions (SOPA) report. Below is the current list of proposed projects available for review—your opportunity to learn more, share feedback, and stay engaged in decisions that shape the future of our public lands.
Project is for a late summer 2025 rally car race and potential future rally car races through December 2030. A rally car race is a timed motorsport event where vehicles do not race side by side but are timed for overall time.
The Forest Service proposes to acquire: 29.336 acres more or less situated on the waters of Stoney Creek (USA Tract U-1634 & U-1634a in Carter County).
The Forest Service proposes to acquire 488 acres, more or less, located in the Fourth Civil District of Washington County southwest of Johnson City, Tennessee.
The project would construct a 36-48 inch wide, 1.1-mile-long, native surface trail in the Buck Branch burn unit. The trail would include viewing areas, fire interpretive kiosks,native plantings, selective tree removal, and trail signs.
Daniel Cates:The Forest Service proposes to acquire 14.79 acres in Carter County, TN. Tiger Creek:The Forest Service proposes to acquire 52 acres in Carter County, TN.
This project proposes to redesign both parking areas to better organize their use and provide for perhaps 2-5 additional spaces at any given time. Both projects will be within currently impacted areas and the adjacent impacted areas.
Acquire three inholdings with total acreage of 548 acres.This acquisition complements the Goals, Objectives, and Desired Future Conditions and would adopt the 7.E.2-"Dispersed Recreation Area" prescription
The FY25 Citico Trail Management Project would conduct trail reconstruction, trail reroutes, trail closures, and complete trail removal/recontouring on Little Citico Horse Trails 3 and 4 and Tavern Branch Trail.

The Hardshell Church in Tellico Plains, TN is partially located on the Tellico Ranger District. The church submitted a special use application to install a septic tank to add indoor toilets to their facility. The drain field would be located on the previously disturbed area surrounding the church.
Hollybush Gap Tract Land Acquisition: 17.18 acres the Granny Lewis Creek drainage. Buffalo Mtn Land Acquisition: 22.26 acres adjacent to Buffalo Mountain ATV Trail.
The Forest Service have developed a proposal to make improvements to the campground and associated infrastructure at the Horse Creek Recreation Area. The reconfiguration would increase accessibility for recreational vehicle camping.
The project would remove the current administration sites at the existing administration area, construct a new administration area, and construct defined camping sites in the overflow camping area.
The Forest Service proposes to acquire: 68 acres m/l flanking the Ocoee River Gorge Portal in Polk County, TN. The parcel would be managed under the 7.A Scenic Byway Corridors RLRMP Prescription.
The project would acquire a parcel of land in Monroe County, TN that is approximately 341 acres. The parcel would be managed under the Prescription 9.H Management, Maintenance, and Restoration of Plant Associations to their Ecological Potential.
The bridge would be replaced with a structure similar to the existing bridge, constructed within the Area of Potential Effect in the attached map. The existing bridge would be removed from the site and disposed of at a suitable location off forest.
The Cherokee National Forest, George Washington and Jefferson National Forests, Monongahela National Forest, and the National Forests in North Carolina seek to implement large landscape red spruce - fir ecosystem restoration.

The project proposes to complete non-commercial silvicultural and wildlife activities and prescribed fire in the Miller Ridge area of the Tellico Ranger District. The work would aim to improve forest health and wildlife habitat.
This project authorizes the installation of an aquatic organism passage structure on the Right Prong of Mill Creek in Carter County, Tennessee. This project will improve aquatic habitat and reduce erosion potential on NFSR 56.
Tennessee Eastman Hiking and Canoeing Club have submitted a proposal to perform needed repairs to the Roan High Knob shelter along the Appalachian Trail in Carter County, Tennessee.
This project would allow routine maintenance on existing trails on the south zone of the Cherokee National Forest and minor reroutes where ground disturbance from natural events, such as tree windfall or landslide, are causing resource damage.
The Southern Appalachian Forests(Cherokee National Forest, George Washington and Jefferson National Forests, National Forests in North Carolina and Chattahoochee - Oconee National Forest seek to implement large landscape watershed resiliency efforts.
The Sugar Mountain Project would utilize commercial timber harvest, wildlife opening enhancements, timber stand improvements, prescribed fire, and other associated actions to increase early successional habitat and improve forest health.

TDS proposes to overlay new fiber optic cable to existing utility lines on national forest land. The project would install approximately 135,421 feet of aerial cable and 32,131 ft of buried cable.
The Watauga Ranger District of the Cherokee National Forest is proposing a series of fuel reduction treatments within the wildland-urban interface to improve forest resiliency to wildfire post-Hurricane Helene.
