This Projects page provides information about projects to manage the resources and uses on the Superior National Forest. Each project listed below displays material used for public involvement and decision making through the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) process.

For more information on the NEPA process, see the Citizens Guide to NEPA produced by the Council on Environmental Quality. 

Please note that planning documents produced under NEPA often have a technical component and analyze environmental effects.

2019 Recreation Needs Assessment

In 2019 the Superior National Forest completed a Recreation Needs Assessment. View the Report and Analysis on our website.

School Trust, et al Land Acquisition

The Superior National Forest published a scoping notice and package on the Forest website under the School Trust and The Conservation Fund Purchase webpage collected public comment August 6 through September 17, 2024.

The Schedule of Proposed Actions (SOPA) contains a list of proposed actions for Superior National Forest that will soon begin or are currently undergoing environmental analysis and documentation. It provides information so that you can become aware of and indicate your interest in specific proposals. We encourage your early and ongoing involvement in any proposals of interest to you.

Superior National Forest Projects

Access to private land crossing Nationals Forest System roads, road association working to obtain a Special Use to do so.

The Kawishiwi Ranger District proposes activities to move vegetation, transportation, recreation, and gravel resources toward desired conditions as described in the Forest Plan.

Based on the current management situation and the need to modernize Forest Plan direction, the Forest is proposing a Forest Plan Amendment of management direction for the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness.

The Minnesota Department of Transportation (MNDOT) is planning to clear the right-of-way (ROW), 35 feet from center line, along MN Highway 1 from Ely to Isabella, from Ely to Forest Rd 553 (Harris Lake), & Cty Hwy 2 to Isabella

Authorization to Minnesota Department of Transportation to replace stony river bridge over Highway 1.

The primary purpose of the project is to reduce the risk of catastrophic wildfire on federal lands, and adjacent at-risk communities by treating along strategically derived Potential Operation Delineations (POD) lines.

Collaborative effort between resource managers, stakeholders, and land owners to improve forest conditions using an all lands approach. Forest management treatments to address natural resource priority objectives across multiple land ownerships.

The USDA Forest Service Superior National Forest is issuing a final decision on the proposed 495 acre Lutsen Ski Hill Proposed Expansion Area. Final documents are available at: https://usfs-public.app.box.com/v/PinyonPublic/folder/237604768361

New access request from the MN DNR, the request is on an old logging access and will require brushing and tree removal.

Keewaydin Resource, Inc. submitted Special Uses Permit (SUP) proposals seeking access over National Forest System (NFS) lands to conduct an indirect geophysical exploration to better understand the extent of the underground helium reservoir.

Access to private land

This project would exchange federal Superior National Forest lands located outside the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW) for Minnesota School Trust land located inside the BWCAW.

Proposed FS acquisition of approximately 80,000 acres of School Trust lands and 3,200 acres of St. Louis County lands within the BWCAW and approximately 17,000 acres of TCF lands outside of the BWCAW but within the Superior National Forest boundary.

This proposal would authorize gravel pit prospecting and expansion of twelve existing gravel pits on the Tofte and Gunflint Ranger Districts to provide mineral materials for administrative and public use.

The project's main purpose is to move towards achieving Forest Plan vegetation objectives within the project area, especially for the landscape ecosystems (LE)
