This Projects page provides information about projects to manage the resources and uses on the Superior National Forest. Each project listed below displays material used for public involvement and decision making through the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) process.

School Trust, et al Land Acquisition
The Superior National Forest published a scoping notice and package on the Forest website under the School Trust and The Conservation Fund Purchase webpage collected public comment August 6 through September 17, 2024.

Superior National Forest
The Forest Service follows NEPA regulations issued by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Under this rule, Forest Service officials determine which proposed projects are shared for public input.
The agency no longer issues a schedule of proposed actions (SOPA) report. Below is the current list of proposed projects available for review—your opportunity to learn more, share feedback, and stay engaged in decisions that shape the future of our public lands.
Teardown private Recreation Residence on East Bearskin Lake. The structural instability and deteriorated condition of the cabin poses a significant safety risk to the permit holder.
The Kawishiwi Ranger District proposes activities to move vegetation, transportation, recreation, and gravel resources toward desired conditions as described in the Forest Plan.
Based on the current management situation and the need to modernize Forest Plan direction, the Forest is proposing a Forest Plan Amendment of management direction for the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness.
Keewaydin Resource, Inc. submitted Special Uses Permit (SUP) proposals seeking access over National Forest System (NFS) lands to conduct indirect geophysical exploration on three 2D lines. The 3D project is now cancelled.
The primary purpose of the project is to reduce the risk of catastrophic wildfire on federal lands, and adjacent at-risk communities by treating along strategically derived Potential Operation Delineations (POD) lines.
Collaborative effort between resource managers, stakeholders, and land owners to improve forest conditions using an all lands approach. Forest management treatments to address natural resource priority objectives across multiple land ownerships.

The MN DNR is planning to remove and replace three culverts on the Stony River Road, one near Wilbur Creek crossing and two crossing the Stony River Spur.
Keewaydin Resource, Inc. submitted Special Uses Permit (SUP) proposals seeking access over National Forest System (NFS) lands to conduct an indirect geophysical exploration to better understand the extent of the underground helium reservoir.
Proposed FS acquisition of approximately 80,000 acres of School Trust lands and 3,200 acres of St. Louis County lands within the BWCAW and approximately 17,000 acres of TCF lands outside of the BWCAW but within the Superior National Forest boundary.
This proposal would authorize gravel pit prospecting and expansion of twelve existing gravel pits on the Tofte and Gunflint Ranger Districts to provide mineral materials for administrative and public use.
The project's main purpose is to move towards achieving Forest Plan vegetation objectives within the project area, especially for the landscape ecosystems (LE)
