Gird Point Lookout

Discover a one-of-a-kind adventure at Gird Point Lookout on the Bitterroot National Forest! This historic 1940s-style L-4 cabin sits atop an 8-foot tower at 7,702 feet, offering breathtaking views of the Bitterroot Valley and Mountains to the west and the Sapphire Mountains to the east.

Located just 11 miles east of Hamilton, Montana, you can drive most of the way and then enjoy a half-mile, moderate hike to reach the lookout.

The cabin has been beautifully restored and furnished with vintage lookout pieces for an authentic experience. There’s no electricity or water, so plan ahead for a rustic stay.

Cabin Features

  • Sleeps up to 4 people (2 beds)
  • Includes:

    • Basic cooking utensils, pots, and pans
    • Basic cleaning equipment
    • Wood stove for heat and cooking
  • Firewood may be available (not guaranteed)
  • Outdoor toilet provided

  • 1-pound propane canisters for cooking and lighting

  • Bedding and sleeping gear

  • Matches or lighter
  • Garbage bags (pack out all trash)
  • Toilet paper
  • Any other personal necessities

Important Rules

  • Pack out all trash
  • Clean the cabin before leaving (basic cleaning supplies are provided)
  • No smoking or open flames (candles)
  • No fireworks

Access & Safety

  • Drive partway, then hike a short, moderate trail to the lookout
  • Guests are responsible for their own travel and safety
  • Cabin sits on an 8-foot tower with narrow steps and catwalk
  • May be hazardous for children and pets

Directions

From Hamilton, MT travel 2 miles south on Highway 93. Turn east (left) on Skalkaho Highway 38 and travel 8.5 miles. Turn north (left) onto Gird Point Rd/FS 714 and follow this winding mountain road approximately thirteen miles to the Gird Point Lookout Trailhead parking area. From there you will hike approximately 3/4 of a mile to the lookout on a moderate grade.

Parking area will accommodate 2-3 vehicles. It is located SW of the lookout, along FS road #714 approximately 13 miles from its junction with Hwy 38 (Skalkaho Hwy).
