Larry Creek Group Site Campground

Larry Creek Group Camp is a terrific location for an extended family or group getaway, providing access to many fishing, hiking, mountain biking and hunting opportunities. Located within the Bass Creek Recreation Area, north of Stevensville, Montana.  Larry Creek Group Camp offers one large, accessible group campsite, and will accommodate up to 75 persons. It is accessible with paved paths to restrooms, picnic shelter and fire rings. A gravel road accesses the campground, driving through a forested area with pine, spruce, and fir trees. Vehicles must stay on Forest Roads and in the designated parking area. Vehicles are not allowed off-road. Motorized access to the meadow is not allowed.

No water or power hookups.  Please note: The existing handpump is out of commission for the remainder of the 2025 season.  

Nightly/Daily Rates $75.00, group sites on recreation.gov operate on a 12-month rolling basis. Reservations are limited to 5 consecutive days.

Bears frequent the area - A Food Storage Order is in effect on all National Forest System lands within the Montana portion of the Bitterroot National Forest from March 1 - December 1 annually.

General Information

A variety of non-motorized trails are nearby, including a half-mile nature trail that highlights some the area's best features. The 9-mile Bass Creek Trail is located just south of the campground and leads to a scenic overlook and many fishing holes. Bass Lake, Bass Creek and numerous additional mountain streams make the campground a very popular location for fishing. An interpretive trail, fitness trail and volleyball court are located within the campground.

A variety of wildlife, including mule and white-tailed deer, elk, moose and birds can often be seen in the area.

April- September 

The site is available during the months of April thru September.  Please contact Recreation.gov for reservation information or call the Stevensville Ranger District at 406-777-5461.

  • Camping limited to 5 consecutive days.  
  • Quiet hours: 10:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m.   
  • Pets must be leashed in the campground.  Consider leashing dogs at all trailheads the first few miles of the trail to prevent user conflicts in congested areas.
  • Food storage required
  • Campfires allowed depending on Fire Danger level.  Ensure your campfire is OUT before you leave.
  • Respect wildlife
  • Use of fireworks or other explosives is prohibited on all National Forest lands
  • Firing a gun is not allowed in or within 150 yards of a residence, building, campsite, developed recreation site, or occupied area, across or on a road or body of water, or in any circumstance whereby any person may be injured or property damaged.

Directions

From Stevensville, Montana take the Stevi cut-off road to Highway 93. Travel north 3.7 miles and turn west (left) onto Bass Creek Rd. Travel approximately 2 miles and turn north onto FS #1316. Follow less than a mile to the group site.

From Missoula, Montana travel south on Highway 93 for 20 miles. Turn west (right) onto Bass Creek Rd. Travel approximately 2 miles and turn north onto FS #1316. Follow less than a mile to the group site.

From Hamilton, Montana travel north on Highway 93 for 23 miles, going past the Stevensville light.  Turn west (left) onto Bass Creek Rd. Travel approximately 2 miles and turn north onto FS #1316. Follow less than a mile to the group site.

Travel Considerations

Bass Creek Road is paved.  The road to the group site is gravel.

The large parking lot can accommodate up to 10 regular vehicles.

A half-mile interpretive nature trail within the Bass Creek Recreation Area highlights the area's best features, including interpretive signs that provide information about wildlife, trees, and plants.

The Lee Metcalf National Wildlife Refuge is located along the Bitterroot River about 20 miles from the campground. The refuge provides visitors with opportunities for wildlife observation, photography, hunting, fishing and environmental education. A wildlife viewing area offers 2.5 miles of nature trails, including an accessible 0.5-mile path. The trails meander through meadows and woodlands along the river.
