Stevensville Ranger District
Discover the Stevensville Ranger District, located in the historic town of Stevensville, Montana—recognized as the state’s first permanent settlement and proudly known as “Where Montana Began.” As the northernmost district of the Bitterroot National Forest, this area blends rich history with stunning scenery and endless opportunities for adventure.
The district spans two distinct landscapes divided by the Bitterroot Valley. To the east, the Sapphire Mountains rise from rolling foothills into forested slopes and the broad crest of the Sapphire Divide. To the west, the Bitterroot Mountains command the skyline with rugged peaks, deep glacial canyons, and direct access to the renowned Selway‑Bitterroot Wilderness. A network of well‑maintained trails invites visitors to explore dramatic canyon terrain—popular among hikers and climbers—and discover quiet, pristine camp settings.
Whether you’re planning a day trip or an extended getaway, the Stevensville Ranger District offers a diverse range of experiences. Popular developed recreation sites—including Bass Creek Recreation Area, Charles Waters Memorial Campground, Larry Creek Group Site, Blodgett Canyon Campground, and Gold Creek Campground—provide ideal starting points for exploring the valley’s natural beauty.
Come experience the landscapes, heritage, and outdoor adventure that make the Stevensville Ranger District a true Montana gem.
