Schumaker Campground
Schumaker Campground, between Hamilton, Montana and Darby, Montana sits on the edge of Twin Lakes near the Selway Bitterroot Wilderness. It features 16 campsites, with two vault toilets and two accessible sites in a forested area. Campsites have trails leading to the shoreline. It is located near the Twin Lakes Trailhead, which leads into the Selway Bitterroot Wilderness.
Twin Lakes are popular for non-motorized boating and fishing. Bring your canoe, kayak, SUP, and fishing pole. Twin Lakes is surrounded by trees and scenic mountain views!
Maximum vehicle length 55 feet.
No Fee. First come/first serve camping. If Schumaker Campground is full, there are opportunities for dispersed camping along Lost Horse Road.
National Forest Road #429 (Lost Horse Road) is a dirt road that is narrow and rough. Drive defensively. High clearance vehicles recommended.
Reservations
- No fees. Campsites are available on a first come/first served basis.
- At least one person must occupy a camping area during the first night after camping equipment has been set up.
- Camping equipment cannot be left unattended for more than 24 hours. The Forest Service is not responsible for any loss or damage to personal property.

- Pets must be leashed in the campground. Consider leashing dogs at all trailheads the first few miles of the trail to prevent user conflicts in congested areas.
- Campfires allowed depending on Fire Danger level. Ensure your campfire is OUT before you leave.
- Do not rinse or wash dishes/etc. out of the lakes/creek. Do it on land.
- Respect wildlife
- Use of fireworks or other explosives is prohibited on all National Forest lands

From Darby, Montana travel 7 miles north on Highway 93. Turn west (left) on Lost Horse Road (National Forest Road #429) and travel approximately 18 miles. Turn right onto National Forest Road #5605 at the Lost Horse Guard Station and follow approximately 2 miles to the campground.
From Hamilton, Montana travel 9 miles south on Highway 93. Turn west (right) on Lost Horse Road (National Forest Road #429) and travel approximately 18 miles. Turn right onto National Forest Road #5605 at the Lost Horse Guard Station and follow approximately 2 miles to the campground.
Travel Considerations
Forest Service Road #429 (Lost Horse Road) can be extremely rough due to many potholes and rocks. High clearance vehicles are recommended.
