Twin Lakes Trailhead

Twin Lakes Trailhead has adequate parking for both cars and trailers. It offers access to the Moose Creek Trail # 421 over Lost Horse Pass and the Wahoo Creek Trail #430 over Wahoo Pass (Information on these trails can be found here (Nez Perce - Clearwater National Forest ). Trails leading out almost immediately enter the Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness (see restrictions below).  Facilites include a vault toilet and loading ramp. Close camping is readily available at Schumaker Campground

General Information

Food Storage Required: Food Storage Order Bitterroot National Forest

Camping is limited to 16 consecutive days: Camping Restrictions Regional Order

Weed Seed Free feed is required on all national forest land: Weed Free Forage Order for Northern Region

Please practice Leave No Trace Principles when visiting forest land.

Pack it in Pack it out, no garbage service provided.  

No overnight camping. 

Mid June -  end of November 

Day use. Overnight parking only allowed if not occupying vehicle. For overnight camping use Schumaker Campground. 

This Trail enters the Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness at approximately mile 0.5

  • Leave No Trace

Prohibited uses include: 

  • Motorized equipment and mechanized travel including e-bikes
  • No Drones
  • No cutting switchbacks

Directions

From Darby, MT travel 7 miles north on Highway 93. Turn west (left) on Lost Horse Road FS 429 and travel approximately 18 miles. Take the north fork (right) at the Lost Horse Cabin onto FS 5605 and follow approximately 2 miles. Continue past the Schumaker Campground turn-off and along the west side of the lake to the trailhead.  Forest Road #429 can be extremely rough due to many potholes and rocks. Recommend high clearance vehicles.

FS Road #429 is closed to wheeled motorized vehicles from 11/30 - 6/16
