Hiking

The Forest has over 2,200 miles of trails that access mountain lakes, peaks, valleys, and wind along river bottoms.

Many of the trails provide for multiple use with hikers, riders, and bikers using the same trail.  On these trails, please be respectful of all users and share the trail. Other trails are designated for specific uses such as the Danny On Trail and the Jewel Basin Hiking Area are for hikers only.

List of trail types on the Flathead National Forest:

  • Motorized trails
  • Non-Motorized trails
  • Wilderness trails
  • ATV trails 30
  • Cross-country ski trails
  • Snowmobile trails
  • Pack and Saddle trails
  • Mountain bike trails

The Forest's trail crews and partners that help keep the trails open for your use try and clear the tails as soon as they are snow free. At any time during summer, trail conditions can change due to wind events, fires, and slides.  Please check the Forest's website alerts prior to using Forest trails.

Backpacking

Backpacking is the perfect way to visit some very beautiful and unique areas in remote locations such as in designated wilderness. Please remember to bring adequate gear and supplies, and remember to check the weather before you strike out on the trail. Trail condition reports area start, but remember to call the ranger district for the area in which you will be traveling before you go for any specific information and current conditions.

Day Hikes

Each district of the Flathead National Forest boasts a plethora of beautiful and enjoyable day hikes. Please call or visit the district offices for suggestions on where to spend your day on the trail!
