Cold Toes Timber Project
Lodgepole pine trees in the Cold Toes project area are heavily infected with mistletoe. Mistletoe stresses trees, leaving them susceptible to infestation by bark beetles. Infected trees pose a risk for spreading mistletoe to younger timber in the project area. Additionally, infected trees can be highly flammable in the event of wildfire, due to the ?witches-brooms? of needles which form in the tree canopies in response to the mistletoe infection. Consistent with Nez Perce Forest Plan direction applicable to the Cold Toes project area, it is important we remove the infected lodgepole pine trees before the mistletoe spreads to adjacent healthy timber stands.
