To report a fire in the Bighorn National Forest, call Cody Interagency Dispatch Center at 800.295.9954 or dial 911.
It's helpful if you can report this information:
- Location
- Estimate of fire size
- Distance and direction from the nearest landmark (town, trailhead, mountain peak)
- Time the smoke was spotted
- A description of the smoke (light, dark, heavy, wispy)
- What's burning (grass, brush, timber)
- Your name and contact number
- Is anyone else at the scene
Steps to take if a wildfire occurs near you:
- Report fires immediately, DIAL 911
- Stay calm.
- Close windows, doors to the house, doors inside the house.
- Take down drapes and curtains.
- Place ladder against front of the house in case of a roof fire.
- Place water in containers to fight fire.
- Wet down roof or turn on roof sprinklers.
- Turn off gas at the meter and/or fuel tank.
- Leave electricity on for lights and water pumps.
- Keep a radio turned to a local station for reports and evacuation information.
- Contact the police for instructions in event of an evacuation.
- Evacuate family and pets to a safe location.
- Park cars away from structures and facing toward the street.
