- Take US-16A West for 1.1 miles.
- At the junction, continue straight onto SD-244 West for 4.6 miles.
- The trailhead is on the north (right) side of the road, about 3 miles past Mount Rushmore and 0.1-mile past Horsethief Lake Campground.

The trailhead offers a large parking area for horse trailers.
