Big Pine Trailhead (Centennial #89)

Big Pine Trailhead is located about 3 miles west of Mount Rushmore National Memorial on the north side of HWY-244 and about ¼ mile northwest of Horsethief Lake. Big Pine is part of the 111-mile Centennial Trail which marks the 100th anniversary of South Dakota statehood (1889-1989). Users on this section of the Centennial Trail are treated to beautiful scenery and relative seclusion. While this segment begins on the Black Hills National Forest, the Centennial Trail crosses multiple jurisdictions and was developed through combined efforts of the Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management, National Park Service, and South Dakota Department of Game, Fish and Parks for public enjoyment.

This trailhead has a large parking area to accommodate horse trailers, along with a bulletin board on site with information and maps available to the public.
