Update/clarification: The Pueblo Interagency Zone Type 3 Team will be managing only the area of the Sharpe fire that is burning in Colorado. This includes firefighting activities, counting of acreage (in Colorado only) and containment.
Date of origin 5/17/2026 9:17 p.m. Size 16,240 acres (acreage in Colorado is being counted separate from acreage burned in Oklahoma) Location Baca County south of Springfield, Colorado, on the Comanche Ranger District of the Pike-San Isabel National Forests & Cimarron and Comanche National Grasslands Containment 100% Cause Lightning caused Cooperating Agencies Baca County, Division of Fire Prevention and Control, and U.S. Forest Service Resources 30 personnel Jurisdiction Baca County and U.S. Forest Service Management Strategies As of 6:00 p.m. 5/18/2026, the Pueblo Interagency Zone Type 3 Team assumed command of the Sharpe Fire to help give some relief to the local responders who have been fighting this fire since Sunday.
The team will be providing logistical and overhead support to firefighters continuing to work to contain this fire.
Evacuations No evacuation orders in place. Closures No current road closures. For closure information, please refer to the Colorado Department of Transportation. Fuels involved Grass, shrubs, juniper and cactus Environmental Hazards Please take extra precautions of the dust and smoke in the area, especially for those with heart disease, respiratory illnesses, the very young and the elderly. Remarks With the Colorado side of the Sharpe fire being 100% contained, many of the crews are demobilizing and returning home. The community can expect to see a few remaining fire engines and overhead in the area as they continue to patrol the fire lines and look for any additional hot spots in the interior of the fire footprint.
