Integrated Management of Target Shooting on the Pike National Forest
The Forest Service is proposing changes to the management of target shooting (also called recreational sport shooting) on the three ranger districts on the Pike National Forest (the Pikes Peak, South Park, and South Platte Ranger Districts). Dispersed target shooting, where forest visitors set up targets and practice shooting in an undesignated, undeveloped location, is a legal use of National Forest System lands that has increased in popularity more than the population growth would predict. The risks to public safety have grown with the increase in visitors and shooting activities. A draft environmental assessment has been prepared describing the environmental effects of three alternatives. The public is invited to review the documents on this project webpage and provide comments using the "Comment/Object on Project" button. Three public meetings will be held to provide an opportunity for the public to learn more about the project. Meetings will be held in person the evenings of Tuesday, August 13 at the Teller County SheriffÂ’s Office and Thursday, August 15 at the Sheridan Library in Denver.
