Halfmoon West Campground
Located off the Halfmoon Road (Forest Service Road 110), Halfmoon West is a first-come, first-served campground, with 17 sites, near the Mount Elbert and Mount Massive trailheads at 9,900 feet. This is a very popular campground for hikers. Facilities include picnic tables, fire rings with grates and vault toilets.
High altitude sickness may occur at this altitude.
Reservations
This location is available on a first-come, first-served basis only. Visitors are required to physically arrive at the campground to purchase and claim a site, if one is available.
General Information
The facility is generally open May through September. Opening and closing dates are weather dependent. Services such as water, trash or a host may not be available during early and late season.

The Interagency Senior Pass (previously known as the Golden Age Pass) and the Interagency Access Pass qualifies for a 50% discount at concessionaire run campsites. The discount only applies to the fee for the campsite physically occupied by the pass owner, not to any additional campsite(s) occupied by members of the pass owner's party.
The following restrictions apply to this campground:
- A maximum of eight people is allowed per site.
- A maximum of three tents or one recreational vehicle (RV) and two tents is allowed per site.
- Dogs must be leashed at all times.
- No discharge of firearms or fireworks is allowed.
- Only licensed vehicles can operate inside the campground.
- Camping is not allowed behind a locked gate.
- Remember to check fishing regulations before fishing at any body of water. For stocking reports and more information on regulations or fishing licenses, check out the Colorado Parks & Wildlife website.
$26 nightly fee per site for overnight camping, which includes two vehicles. A third vehicle is an additional $11 per night. RVs and ATV/boat trailers count as one vehicle.
Fees are payable by cash, check or money order. A self-service fee tube is available.
First-come, first-served sites must be occupied the first night.
Dogs must be leashed at all times.

Directions
From Leadville, travel south approximately 3 miles on U.S. Highway 24. Turn right on Colorado 300 at the Leadville National Fish Hatchery sign. Continue about 3/4 of a mile and turn left at the Halfmoon Campground sign. Follow this road and turn right at the Halfmoon sign at the end of the pavement. This dirt road will lead to the Halfmoon East/West and Elbert Creek areas. (Note: This road is not maintained in the winter.)
