Mount Sherman (Fourteener)
Mount Sherman, is Colorado's 46th highest peak at 14,036 feet. This mountain, usually considered one of the easiest of Colorado's 54 Fourteeners, is an excellent climb for beginning mountaineers, but basic mountaineer rules still apply. It is a fast hike for a reasonably fit person since it is possible to park as high as 12,000 feet, leaving only a couple thousand feet of elevation gain to the summit and a round-trip hike of just over five miles. Like all the Fourteeners though, Mount Sherman needs to be treated with respect. Thunderstorms can move in quickly and it always windy on Sherman's upper ridge and summit. It's necessary to get an early start, carry rain gear, and keep an eye on the weather for thunderstorms.
Keep in mind that this mountain is on a privately owned mining claim and is not on public land. Misuse of this trail could lead to closure. Please respect private property and follow Leave No Trace Outdoor Ethics.
General Information
- Mountain weather is unpredictable and can change quickly. Be prepared with rain gear and extra layers of warm clothing. Always check the weather forecast before heading out.
- Thunderstorms occur frequently in the afternoons, so plan your trip accordingly. Also, keep in mind thunderstorms build rapidly, so keep an eye on the weather and get below timberline at the first sign of a thunderstorm. Follow these Lightening Safety Tips.
- Combat altitude sickness by acclimating gradually and staying hydrated. If symptoms (i.e., severe headache, dizziness, or nausea) do occur, immediately descend to a lower elevation.
- At high altitudes, sunlight is much more intense and the air is much drier. Wear sunscreen and a hat, and drink plenty of fluids. Always carry a map and compass and know how to use them.
